Overview These papers are concerned with five separate expeditions for collecting vertebrates in South America. The first three, in 1929-1932 were made to Peru, while the second two, 1933-1935 were to Bolivia. Melbourne A. Carriker was a Philadelphian interested in becoming a collector and through the sponsorship of the Academy and financial aid of Clement B. Scope and Contents This unpublished two volume journal kept by Charles Pickering covers the portion of the U.S. Exploring Expedition from Madeira to the Hawaiian Islands. John R. Quinn Illustrations

Overview John R. Quinn, 1938-, artist and naturalist, was an Academy employee in the exhibits department. Quinn spent the month of March in 1968 working on illustrations for De Schaunsee's A guide to The Birds of South America. The collection contains thirty acrylic paintings of South American birds: nineteen in color, eleven in black white. Samuel Nicholson Rhoads, Papers

Scope and Contents

Naturalist, ornithologist, mammalogist, book dealer and businessman, Samuel Rhoads wrote particularily on the local fauna of birds and mammals. The journals of his various expeditions contain mostly natural history data. Those written from Ecuador and Guatemala include also information about the countries. He was a founder of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, its Secretary and later its President.
